Castles, Coastlines & Cobblestones: Our Epic 11-Day UK Itinerary Through England & Scotland 🇬🇧

Dreaming of exploring ancient castles, dramatic coastlines, and charming old towns? This unforgettable 11-day UK adventure takes you through the very best of England and Scotland—packed with iconic landmarks, stunning scenery, and local eats. From uncovering the mystery of Stonehenge to wandering the fairytale streets of Edinburgh, this is your ultimate guide to planning the perfect Great Britain getaway.

We relied on our travel itinerary and packing checklist to stay organized every step of the way. It made all the difference. Smooth travel = better exploration.

A quick tip for fellow travelers: using a UK international eSIM made exploring effortless. It automatically connected us to local networks—no SIM swapping, no fuss, just instant coverage.

We flew Virgin Atlantic (via Delta codeshare) from the US via online booking. While check-in was rocky due to some airline staff issues, one incredible flight attendant turned it around. She noticed I was asleep during meal service and thoughtfully set aside my breakfast for when I woke up. Later, when dinner was served, I let her know I wasn’t hungry yet. She kindly saved my meal for later. She made sure I didn’t miss out. Even after I woke up, she checked in to ensure I had everything I needed. It’s these small acts of kindness and attentive service that truly make a travel experience memorable.

Day 1: London Arrival – Covent Garden & Culinary Delights

Touchdown in London, where history and modern life collide!
We hopped on the Heathrow Express (only 15 mins!) and checked into the Montcalm Chilworth Townhouse — just a 5-minute walk from Paddington Station. Our cozy club room came with sweet little complimentary perks.

Next stop: Covent Garden! A must-visit for street performances, boutique shopping, and classic British eats.
Tip: Use contactless cards for cheaper fares on the Tube (underground station) — way better than buying single tickets.

We wandered the charming streets. Shops close around 6 PM, but it’s still lively. Then, we dined on Shepherds Pie, Tiramisu, and Green Olives at The Ivy Market Grill. We then headed back to recharge for day two. By the way, I loved their lady’s room (check my instagram to take a look).

Day 2: Stonehenge, Jurassic Coast & Tintagel – Ancient Mysteries & Coastal Drama

Fueled by onigiri and kimbap, we picked up our rental car (automatic transmission) from Enterprise at Apcoa Paddington. Heads-up: despite pre-booking, we faced more than one hour delays and a car swap. Tip: Call ahead if you need an automatic—availability is limited.

Stops on our first UK road trip day:

  • Stonehenge – A 5,000-year-old prehistoric monument wrapped in mystery. A must-see especially if you’re history lovers. Find out the interesting facts about it.
  • Jurassic Coast – Hiked to the stunning Durdle Door and relaxed at Lulworth Cove, soaking in ancient cliffs and coastal views.

Due to time constraints, we saved Tintagel Castle for Day 3 and rested at King Arthur’s Arms Inn, just steps from the site. There’s no elevator, but the helpful receptionist kindly assisted us by carrying our luggage upstairs. It was our first time discovering that their towel hanger was actually heated-a cozy surprise! The room was spotless with good portion of amenities.

Day 3: Tintagel Castle, Bath & Cotswolds – Roman History & Storybook Villages

We kicked off our Cornwall adventure with a hearty Full English Breakfast at the inn, fueling up for a day of legendary discovery. Just a short walk away awaited Tintagel Castle, one of the most iconic historic sites in the UK and a must-visit for anyone chasing the magic of England’s countryside. Tintagel Castle is perched dramatically on Cornwall’s rugged cliffs. It is steeped in Arthurian legend and mystery. The site is said to be the birthplace of King Arthur himself.

We explored the medieval ruins and crossed the spectacular footbridge. We were mesmerized by panoramic views of the wild Atlantic coastline. The windswept headland added to the experience. It’s not just the history that makes Tintagel unforgettable. The breathtaking coastal scenery sets it apart as one of the best places to visit in Cornwall. The sense of ancient myth adds to its allure for history lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.

A quick note for fellow travelers: Tintagel Castle isn’t ideal for young children. It is not suitable for those with accessibility needs either. The paths can be steep and uneven. We fell in love with the UK countryside and honestly wished we could have lingered all day, but our adventure called us onward to…

Bath: A UNESCO World Heritage City of Roman History

A scenic drive to Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage city known for:
✔ Roman Baths – Including the steamy Great Bath
✔ Temple artifacts
✔ Bath Abbey Tower Climb – Panoramic city views (admission fee required)

Despite being one of the UK’s most congested cities, Bath’s historic Georgian architecture and elegant layout make it a must-visit.

We traveled from Bath into the idyllic Cotswolds. We stopped at Bourton-on-the-Water, which is often called the “Venice of the Cotswolds” for its stone bridges and riverside charm. This quintessential English village was just as enchanting as Tintagel village, with its charming streets and timeless atmosphere.

For dinner, we indulged in authentic British fish and chips—crispy, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The friendly waitress even helped us with directions—fantastic service!

We ended the day at Chesford Grange Hotel, close to Shakespeare’s Kenilworth Castle—a romantic ruined fortress. The spacious room was perfect. Please note: there is no elevator too. Be prepared to carry luggage. Thankfully, a helpful receptionist assisted us again!

Day 4: Kenilworth Castle: Elizabethan Gardens & Romantic Ruins – York

Before our journey continued north, we visited the majestic Kenilworth Castle. This dramatic, red-stone ruin is famously linked to Shakespeare. It also has ties to Queen Elizabeth I. The castle is surrounded by lush, landscaped gardens. It is steeped in over 900 years of history. It’s a must-visit for history buffs, photographers, and anyone craving a glimpse into medieval romance and royal intrigue.

This underrated gem in Warwickshire is a peaceful detour with powerful storytelling around every corner.

York: A Walled Medieval City with Viking Roots

Next, we drove to York, a UNESCO-worthy medieval city famed for its Viking heritage and Gothic architecture. Must-see highlights:
✔ York Minster – One of Europe’s most magnificent Gothic cathedrals (climb the Central Tower for breathtaking views!)
✔ The Shambles – A charming, crooked lane lined with timber-framed shops (said to inspire Diagon Alley!)

⚠ Important Travel Tip: York’s compact medieval layout means limited parking and narrow streets. We encountered an unfriendly local frustrated with tourists struggling to park—thankfully, another kind stranger guided us. Skip the hassle—use public transport!

Where We Stayed: Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly

  • Comfortable & Convenient – Great variety at breakfast
  • Parking Note – The hotel has no on-site parking (we used a nearby public car park overnight)
  • Receptionist Advice: York’s government discourages driving—buses and walking are best!

Dining in York: A Taste of Britain

✔ The York Roast Co. – We tried their famous Yorkshire Pudding wrap. It was decent, but not mind-blowing.
✔ Drake’s Fish & Chips – Crispy, fresh, and delicious! A must-eat in York.

York is a magical medieval city—just leave the car behind!

Day 5: Gothic Adventure: Whitby Abbey & a Night in Lumley Castle

Whitby Abbey: A Dracula-Inspired Coastal Escape

Enter the eerie world of Bram Stoker’s Dracula at Whitby Abbey. It is a hauntingly beautiful ruin positioned high above the North Sea. For the full Gothic experience:
✔ Climb the legendary 199 Steps to St. Mary’s Church for spine-tingling views of the abbey and coast.
✔ Explore Whitby’s charming old town—filled with quirky shops, fresh seafood, and ghostly tales.

Lumley Castle Hotel: A 14th-Century Royal Retreat

After our coastal adventure, we checked into Lumley Castle Hotel in Durham—a real medieval fortress where you dine like royalty! Our stay was unforgettable:
✔ Castle View Room – Slept in history with authentic stone walls and period decor. (check on my youtube)
✔ Feast-Worthy Dining – Impeccable service and delicious food fit for a king or queen.

Detour in Durham: Medieval Majesty Meets Modern Vibes

Our original plan to tour Durham Castle (UNESCO World Heritage Site) didn’t pan out—it was closed that day! But the city didn’t disappoint. Instead, we uncovered a charming blend of old-world beauty and modern culture:

✔️ Prince Bishops Shopping Centre and Durham Market Place – A lively hub for shopping and people-watching. It offers a contemporary contrast to Durham’s historic heart. (Check out my Instagram)
✔️ Durham Cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site) – We wandered its ivy-draped courtyards. We soaked in the awe-inspiring Gothic architecture. It is surrounded by the legacy of centuries-old academia.

Even with the change in plans, Durham turned out to be a picturesque and peaceful stop worth savoring.

Day 6: Alnwick, Bamburgh & Newcastle

Channel your inner wizard at Alnwick Castle, the iconic Harry Potter filming location that brought Hogwarts to life! From broomstick training sessions to the whimsical Lilidorei play village, it’s a dream destination for families traveling with kids.

That said, for adults without children, the entry fee of Lilidorei may feel a bit steep compared to the overall experience. However, the castle grounds and photo ops still make it a memorable stop in Northern England.

Bamburgh Castle: A Coastal Majesty

Next, we marveled at Bamburgh Castle, a stunning seaside fortress towering over golden sands. Time didn’t permit a visit to Lindisfarne Priory. It is a tidal island with ancient ruins and famed Lindisfarne Mead. However, it’s a must for history lovers!

Newcastle: A Modern Stopover

After dropping off our rental car, we stayed at Four Points by Sheraton Newcastle. It was minimalist, clean, and conveniently close to Newcastle Central Station. Dinner at Oodles Wok was a flavorful highlight!

Day 7: Edinburgh – Scottish Grandeur

When you’re in the UK, riding the train is essential. It’s not just for convenience but also for the experience. You get to witness the country’s iconic railway system. This system traces its roots back to the world’s first passenger steam railway. The Stockton and Darlington Railway was launched in 1825. We hopped on the LNER train to Edinburgh Waverley. We soaked in scenic views. Then we checked into the elegant Mount Royal Hotel. The friendly receptionist stored our luggage early, giving us time to explore this UNESCO-listed city right away.

Lunch at The Witchery: A Gothic Culinary Experience

Tucked beside the historic Edinburgh Castle, The Witchery by the Castle is one of the city’s most romantic restaurants. It is known for its gothic charm and candlelit ambiance. This setting is ideal for anniversaries, proposals, or an unforgettable night out.

Pro tip: Reservations are essential—especially for dinner, as this spot books up fast.

What We Tried:
– A seasonal lunch course – Average taste.
– 28-Day Aged Scotch Beef Fillet – Tender and flavorful, though not the standout.
– Legendary Chocolate Torte – A signature dessert with a 30-year-old recipe. Rich, indulgent, and worth every bite!

No trip to Edinburgh is complete without stepping inside the legendary Edinburgh Castle. It is perched atop Castle Rock with sweeping views of the city skyline. It’s one of the most visited historic sites in Scotland and a true highlight of any UK itinerary.

Here’s what not to miss inside:

✔ Scotland’s Crown Jewels – The dazzling Honours of Scotland.
✔ Panoramic city views – Perfect for postcard-worthy photos.
✔ Centuries of royal and military history – Dive into tales of kings, queens, and epic battles.

Dinner at Duck & Waffle: A Duck Lover’s Paradise

Craving a modern twist on British classics? Duck & Waffle Edinburgh delivered on all fronts! This chic, high-energy restaurant is a must for foodies visiting the city.

What to order: The standout was their crispy duck confit. It was tender, juicy, and so flavorful. We couldn’t resist ordering a second plate (this time, no waffle). The foei gras brulee was good but not the star.
Service highlight: Huge shoutout to the exceptional hostess who customized our order with ease and a smile. It’s this kind of personalized service that elevates the whole experience!

Why We Loved Edinburgh

✔ Mount Royal Hotel – Perfect central location, cozy rooms, and excellent service.
✔ Edinburgh’s Tap Water – Pure, fresh, soft on skin, and famously delicious (some say the best in the UK!)
✔ Walkable & Historic – From castle views to charming alleys, every corner tells a story.

Day 8: Glasgow Day Trip: Museums, Cathedrals & Curry Adventures

We took the ScotRail from Edinburgh Waverley → Glasgow Queen Street for a smooth day trip. A quick tip: Public toilets at Glasgow Queen Street station requires 50p coins (no contactless!), but a kind local helped us out—pack change just in case!

Exploring Glasgow’s Historic & Cultural Gems

✔ Glasgow Cathedral & Necropolis – A medieval cathedral and atmospheric Victorian cemetery with panoramic city views. It’s the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to have survived the Protestant Reformation of 1560 virtually intact.
✔ Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum – A free, world-class museum perfect for all ages. It features art and natural history. There is even a floating heads exhibit! (We spent hours here and loved it!). They also have an important collection of French 19th century paintings. This collection includes works by Monet, Gauguin, and Renoir inside the gallery.

Getting Around: Buses & Subway

🚌 Public Buses – Delays are common (ours was 15+ minutes late), so allow extra time if hopping between sights.
🚇 Subway (Tube) – The subway is faster for last-minute train connections. It is more reliable. We used it to rush back for our 6 PM train to Edinburgh.

If you’re looking for the ultimate curry experience in the UK, Glasgow is a top contender. Often hailed as the birthplace of Chicken Tikka Masala—a beloved British classic—this city knows how to deliver rich, flavorful plates.

After our return, we wandered down the Royal Mile, soaking in Edinburgh’s historic charm. From cobblestone lanes to photo-worthy corners, it’s the perfect place for an evening stroll. We craved traditional Scottish food but the restaurant was fully booked. So, we found ourselves at Jimmy’s Express Chinese—simple, fast, and satisfying!

Day 9: Return to London: Historic Sights & Iconic Views

We packed up our bags in Edinburgh and hopped on a 4.5-hour LNER train back to London. Booking early saved us money, and the ride was smooth and scenic—time flew by!

Our stay at Park Grand Paddington Court lived up to its great reviews. The room was compact but spotless. It was just a 10-minute walk to the London Underground, making it ideal for exploring the city.

Exploring London: Tower Bridge & Missed Opportunities

We made it to the iconic Tower Bridge just in time to catch a rare bridge lift—such a mesmerizing sight! Unfortunately, we arrived too late to visit the Tower of London, so we grabbed dinner at The Real Greek. It was decent, but didn’t quite satisfy our foodie cravings.

The London Eye in Pink: A Dreamy Nighttime Scene 🎡🌸

Ended the day at the London Eye. It was bathed in a dreamy pink glow. This setting was perfect for stunning photos before heading back to rest. Still hungry, we ended the night with a surprise restaurant near our hotel: Tukdin Flavours of Malaysia. The Nasi Lemak and Mee Goreng Mamak were flavorful and comforting—just what we needed (and yes, we forgot to take photos because we were too busy enjoying it!). Next stop: Windsor Castle for a royal adventure and a bit of shopping!

Days 10: Windsor Castle & Bicester Village – Royalty & Retail Therapy

Witness the Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle

Our plans to visit Buckingham Palace were dashed since it was closed during our stay. We decided to visit Windsor Castle instead. We wanted to catch the iconic Changing of the Guard ceremony. It usually takes place around 11 AM. The guards in their posts must remain silent, except for brief marches every 10 minutes. Pro Tip: Be sure to check the official Windsor Castle website for schedule updates. The ceremony may be canceled for special events!

Photography Tip: You can only take private photos and videos in the outdoor areas of the castle.

Getting There: Train from London Paddington

Route to Windsor:
We took the GWR train from London Paddington to Windsor & Eton Central. Then, we transferred to a Windsor train. Why this route? We had to catch a later train from London Marylebone to Bicester Village.

An alternative? A direct train from London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside—though it’s a bit longer and doesn’t require a transfer.

Before we headed to Bicester Village, we enjoyed our incredible lunch at Pearl Liang. It is a top spot for Peking Duck and Dim Sum. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the food was nothing short of amazing.

After a satisfying meal, we took the train to London Marylebone, then onward to Bicester Village for some shopping. Here, you’ll score discounts on luxury brands like Celine, Burberry, Dior, and more!
Travel Hack: Book discounted tickets for the Chiltern Railways via the Bicester Village website (departure from London Marylebone).
Note: Unlike Europe, the UK doesn’t offer tax refunds for tourists, so be sure to budget accordingly!

Day 11: Final London Moments: Breakfast, Afternoon Tea & Airport Lounge Tips

A Classic British Sendoff: Full English Breakfast & Afternoon Tea

We savored two quintessential UK experiences before flying home:
🍳 Full English Breakfast near our hotel. It was a good farewell, but not as excellent as the one we had at King’s Arthur Arms Inn!
☕ Afternoon Tea at Roseate House London – Loved the elegant ambiance (a must for tea lovers!).

Airport Transfer: Elizabeth Line vs. Heathrow Express

After experiencing the speed and convenience of the Heathrow Express, we decided to try the Elizabeth Line on our return. It’s a budget-friendly alternative—only about £11 per person—but be prepared: it can get quite crowded, especially during peak times.

Travel Moment: My backpack hilariously got stuck in the ticket gate—definitely a memory I won’t forget!
The ride takes around 30–35 minutes from London Paddington to Heathrow, depending on your terminal.

If you’re short on time, the Heathrow Express is still the fastest option. It zips to Terminals 2 and 3 in just 15 minutes. The trade-off? It costs about £25 one-way per person, but comes with spacious seating and dedicated luggage racks—a premium travel experience.

Pre-Flight Relaxation: No.1 Lounge at Heathrow

Want to unwind before your flight? The No.1 Lounge is a great escape—but there’s a waitlist system. Use your phone number or email to join the line once you arrive. I spoke to a fellow traveler who had waited over 30 minutes without luck. Her flight scheduled in 5 hours later. We, however, were let in within 5 minutes—timing is everything!

Top Tip: Arrive within 3 hours of your departure—priority is given to same-day travelers or those with lounge reservations.
Perks include: A chilled vibe, cinema room, great food & drinks.
